PURE POETRY! An exceptional all-black ensemble…spun, stomped, and soared.

The Boston Globe

The Black Clown is precisely why we have and need theater.

Jared Bowen, WGBH

The Black Clown is a world premiere music theater experience that fuses vaudeville, gospel, opera, jazz, and spirituals to bring Langston Hughes’ verse to life onstage and animate a Black man’s resilience against a legacy of oppression. The production features Davóne Tines (Crossing and Run AMOC! Festival) in the title role, an ensemble of twelve, and a new score by Michael Schachter (Run AMOC! Festival).

This production contains racial slurs and stylized representations of violence, particularly related to slavery, as well as haze, simulated smoking, and bright flashing lights. Well-prepared teenagers will appreciate the stylized movement, dynamic music, and deep engagement with American history.

Adapted from Langston Hughes’ poem by Davóne Tines & Michael Schachter
Music by Michael Schachter
Music Director Jaret Landon
Choreography Chanel DaSilva
Directed by Zack Winokur
