Valmont and Merteuil, once lovers, conspire to seduce a virtuous wife and a young virgin to satisfy their own lust and need for revenge. In the course of their power plays, their plan backfires and the victimizers become the victims of their own devious plot. A chorus of three figures participates in and comments on the action. In the end, Valmont poisons himself and Merteuil dies of cancer.
