To cope with the reality of the present, two sisters imagine they are the aging movie stars Dolores Del Rio and Maria Felix. At the end of Act I, a sycophantic fan blackmails Dolores into going away with him. Feeling abandoned, Maria kills herself in despair, unaware that Dolores has murdered her blackmailer and plans to return.
