Olympian Games is a musical adaptation of six famous myths from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Each is based on a story that climaxes with a miraculous transformation. Halcyon and her husband, Cyex, are turned into singing birds after Halcyon brings Cyex back to life. Myrrha is changed into a gnarled tree as punishment for incest. Hercules’ second wife, Deianeira, unwittingly kills her husband by sending him a garment that has the power to reclaim him from unlawful loves. Pygmalion creates the beautiful Galatea from stone. Tereus rapes his sister-in-law Philomela and tears out her tongue. Her sisters seek revenge by savagely murdering Tereus’ five-year-old son and serving him to his father for dinner. The gods then transform Tereus into a hawk, Philomela into a nightingale, aand the son into a pheasant. Finally, Baucis and Philemon are united as trees that will grow together as reward for their generosity.
