In Twilight: Tales From Chekhov

The evening was comprised of theatrical treatments of four short stories by Chekhov. The Butterfly, based on Chekhov’s The Grasshopper, concerns a dull physician’s passionate young bride who has a stormy affair with a wastrel painter. Difficult People concerns a son’s attempt to convince his boorish father to give him the money he desperately needs to attend a university. In the Ravine tells the story of a merchant family consumed by greed and its effect on an innocent girl who marries into the family. In The Student, a young boy tells the story of St. Peter to a pair of widows he meets on the road. In the course of telling the story, he himself is inspired by it.
