In order to repay King Admetus for his friendship and good service, Apollo grants him a reprieve from death if he can find someone to take his place. Although his aged father and mother refuse, Admetus’ wife, Alcestis, agrees to the sacrifice on the condition that he vows not to remarry. When Hercules, a true friend of Admetus, learns of Alcestis’ death, he brings her back to life.
