Playwright Sarah Ruhl reflects on her journey with Wonder—from first encountering the story to vulnerable moments in the rehearsal room—and the power of performance

Garrett McNally said he wanted to audition because he wanted to tell Auggie’s story with real representation. “Wonder” shows that people with differences don’t need to change the way they look, he said. “People just need to change the way they see.”

“I didn’t realize Nate was written for me, but that’s how it feels,” said Javier Muñoz, “It’s like this character was just waiting for me.”

Wonder is an opportunity to imagine a world where our differences bring us together rather than move us apart. “One of the great gifts of the theater is our capacity for imagination, and imagination is a required skill for social justice,” [Director Taibi Magar] said.
